The Lakenvelder is a breed of chicken developed in the 1830s in Germany. This rare variety of chicken is one of the most beautiful, with striking black and white markings and slate colored legs. They were bred extensively in Germany and Holland as long ago as the early 1800’s, but were not recognized here until the 1930’s. They are quite small when mature, 3 to 4 Ibs., and very quick and active, foraging widely if allowed to run. While it does well on range, it also bears confinement well and is a good layer of small to medium white or cream eggs. The Lakenvelder chicken is just one of the many unique and beautiful birds you can see at Spokane’s premiere Petting Farm, brought to you by Mountain Valley View Farm.
