My Story: Treatment by Dr. Robert Fuller

After my achalasia diagnosis in September 2007, I extensively researched treatment options and sought out the most experienced and knowledgeable physicians. In October, I elected to have surgery (a Heller Myotomy). In a Heller Myotomy, the muscle of the valve that is between the esophagus and stomach is cut.  The top of the stomach is then placed over the top of the cut edge, allowing for easier passage of food from the esophagus into the stomach.

My surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Fuller at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, and the results have been excellent. My quality of life has improved exponentially, and I am now able to eat very comfortably and enjoy life again. It has helped so much, I feel that it is no exaggeration to say that the surgery saved my life. Dr. Fuller is an excellent surgeon, and his staff is knowledgeable and experienced. I will say that, as with many physicians, his bedside manner is not the best but the results are well worth it. I would highly recommend his services to anyone suffering from achalasia.

I also have had a Heller Myotomy performed by Dr. Fuller. Considering I had lost about 30 pounds and was unable to eat anything but liquids at the time of the surgery, my quality of life has greatly improved! However I feel it’s necessary to sleep much more upright than before in order to keep heart burn at bay, but all in all I am very greatful for Dr. Fuller and the time he put into my case. I drove 9 hours to go see him and it was totally worth it!

P.S. My surgery was in December 2005.

I have a 31 year old son with Down Syndrome. He is to have the surgery in 2 wks. My concern is he has acid reflux really bad. I am trying to find something that he can eat that will help him. I am pleading for any advise.
